Government finds highway compromise

THE GOVERNMENT on June 26 compromised on plans to build faster road links between Bratislava and the eastern city of Košice.

The state will allocate 60 percent of the budget for the building programme to completing the northern highway route via Trenčín, Žilina, and Poprad, which should be finished within 7 years. A further 25 percent will go towards dual carriageways in the south, between Bratislava and Zvolen, and from Zvolen to Košice.

If investors show increased interest in the northern route, more money will be diverted to complete the southern route, said Minister of Transport, Post, and Telecommunications Pavol Prokopovič.

"I'm glad we've found a compromise," he said.

The New Citizen's Alliance (ANO) and Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) had been pushing for more resources for the southern route.
