THE AGRICULTURE ministries of EU countries agreed on June 26 to sweeping changes in the distribution of agricultural subsidies. Under the new system, subsidies would be paid for the land farmed, rather than the amount of goods produced. Slovak farmers view the changes positively.
"We welcome the endorsement of the reforms, which look likely to simplify the system at a single stroke," said Slovak agriculture minister Zsolt Simon.
Current agricultural subsidies take up about half of the total €100 billion EU budget.
