THE LONGEST road tunnel in Slovakia has finally opened, over three years late and Sk2 billion (€48 million) over budget.
One of the main reasons for the delay and cost overrun was a tightening of safety measures in the tunnel, say transportation officials.
"After accidents in [various] Alpine tunnels we wanted to follow new safety advice," explained Peter Barek, general director of the roads section of the Transport Ministry.
The tunnel, near Levoča in eastern Slovakia, forms part of the northern highway route between Bratislava and Košice currently under construction. The total cost of the project was Sk7.6 billion (€182 million).
