Teething problems at new road tunnel

DRIVERS reported that the newly opened Branisko road tunnel in eastern Slovakia had filled with smoke on July 3.

The tunnel's director said that the problem was due to a particular vehicle with mechanical problems that had belched out exhaust fumes, and that the ventilation system had removed the smoke after a short period of time.

Several speeding motorists have already been fined since the tunnel opened on June 29. It has a temporary 60km/hour limit and speed cameras. The tunnel has also had problems with families stopping their cars to take souvenir photographs.
