Mečiar fears rising SDKÚ power

ON AUGUST 26, President Rudolf Schuster met boss of the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) Vladimír Mečiar, who claimed that the country is torn by too many political conflicts.

Mečiar thinks that Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda has erred in publicly talking about the criminal group that he says has been trying to disintegrate the state. The HZDS boss suggested that the group might be even wider than Dzurinda had previously stated.

According to the HZDS, Dzurinda should have quietly ordered the Slovak Intelligence Service to dismantle the group and not drag the case into the public.

The HZDS boss, who was criticised for the authoritarian style of rule during his government, is concerned about Dzurinda's political party, the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), getting too strong. "They want to occupy the positions of the president, the EU commissioner, the Supreme Court, shortly the prosecutor general, and later the Supreme Audit Office boss post," Mečiar warned, adding that it is harmful if too much power is concentrated within one party.
