Reader feedback: Singing praise for a diva

Re: Opera diva returns home, By Zuzana Habšudová, Oct 13 - 19, Vol 9, No 39

I am a tenor who has idolized the great lady for years now. Madame [Edita] Gruberova has had an enormous influence on me as a musician, and I share her artistry with all who know me.

Her choice of roles and the relative order in which she took them on is nothing short of genius... starting out primarily in the German repertoire and building her spectacular technique, then assuming bel canto roles as she grew older and her voice grew somewhat darker makes for a near-perfect career. As marvellous and warm-blooded as her role as Konstanze is, her Anna Bolena may well be the most perfect vocal and dramatic embodiment ever.

It is a shame that she does not sing in the USA anymore. But, nonetheless, she is perhaps the greatest singer of the last half of the 20th century, and she continues to glorify whatever stage she steps onto in the 21st century as well. God bless her. I hope the Slovak people appreciate her as much as the rest of the world does.
