Twelve men contest for president

TWELVE men are running to be Slovakia's head of state.

The list was completed on January 30, with President Rudolf Schuster and chairman of the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) Vladimír Mečiar announcing their candidacies just a few hours before the deadline, Michal Dyttert, spokesman for the speaker of parliament told the Pravda daily.

Both men are seen as favourites in the race, as well as Foreign Minister Eduard Kukan and ex-HZDS deputy chairman Ivan Gašparovič, according to analysts.

The elections will take place on April 3. If no candidate wins a majority in the first round, the two best candidates will meet in a second round on April 17.
