Workforce survey

THE LATEST data released by the Statistics Office showed that Slovakia had 2.6 million economically active people in the third quarter of 2003, up 0.5 percent year-on-year.

The state run TASR news agency wrote that, in the given period, 83 percent of them were employed.

Most of Slovakia's working population, 89.8 percent, are employees of a specific company or organisation, while 9.7 percent of the workforce are independent tradespeople and businesspeople.

Traditionally, the sectors with the highest employment have been industrial production, trade, and the construction industry.

TASR wrote that, during the period, Slovakia had 449,000 unemployed.
