THE STATE Pedagogical Institute in Bratislava, in cooperation with the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement, held the 2nd international meeting of coordinators of the Progress In Reading Literacy Study project. The first tests in Slovakia of "literacy with the ability to understand" were conducted at 150 elementary schools in 2001 by the State Pedagogical Institute. The research placed Slovakia in the 20th position of the 35 participating countries. It was in the group of countries whose results exceeded the average international rate.
