Referendum fails, turnout far below 50 percent

THE REFERENDUM on early elections failed, as voter turnout was far below the required 50 percent, the SITA news wire reported.

The voter turnout in the plebiscite on April 3 was 35.86 percent, according to a source close to the Central Referendum Commission.

Of the 4,193,347 eligible voters, 1,503,784 cast their votes in the referendum, which was initiated by the trade unions and the opposition parties in an attempt to topple the government.
