Cox: New Slovak president will start with handicap

SPEAKER of European Parliament Pat Cox said that whoever is picked from the two competitors for the Slovak presidential seat, will start with a handicap, the Slovak daily SME wrote.

Three-time ex-PM Vladimír Mečiar and former speaker of the Slovak Parliament Ivan Gašparovič, a onetime member of Mečiar’s Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, will meet in the second round of presidential elections on April 17.

The 1994 - 1998 Mečiar cabinet ran Slovakia into international isolation and was widely blamed for losing sight of democratic principles.

At a meeting with Pál Csáky, Slovak deputy PM for integration, Cox said that the EU would keep an eye on developments in Slovakia.
