Clinton denies supporting Mečiar

A SPOKESWOMAN for former US president Bill Clinton, Tammy Sun, denied the statement that Bill Clinton gave verbal support to Vladimír Mečiar's candidacy for Slovak president.

"Bill Clinton did not support Mr Mečiar," Sun said to the daily SME.

Vladimír Mečiar's election team recently published a list of foreign and Slovak personalities who they said supported the three-time PM’s bid for the presidential seat. The list included Clinton.

The head of Mečiar's election team, Viliam Soboňa, told the state-run news agency TASR on April 13 that Clinton's support came in the form of a signed photograph he sent to Mečiar.

According to Martin Bútora, the former Slovak Ambassador to the US, American politicians send their photographs to hundreds of thousands of people after finishing their terms in office. "If you tell them that you are getting ready for an important event they will tell you ‘good luck’, which you certainly cannot consider support, said Bútora.
