Prodi congratulates next Slovak president

ROMANO Prodi, the head of the European Commission (EC) congratulated Ivan Gašparovič on his victory in presidential elections.

Eric van der Linden, the head of the European Commission Delegation to Slovakia, passed the congratulations to Gašparovič on April 21, the private news agency SITA wrote.

Prodi wrote that the EC looks forward to good and productive cooperation with Gašparovič.

Gašparovič beat Vladimír Mečiar, the head of the opposition party Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, in the second round of the presidential elections. On June 15 Gašparovič will take over the post from the incumbent, Rudolf Schuster.
