Košice official charged with fraud

THE ANTI-Corruption Office has laid charges of fraud and misconduct against a senior municipal official of Slovakia's eastern city of Košice, Interior Minister Vladimir Palko told the press.

The charges regard an order to build 150 apartments awarded to the Kame Slovakia - Group. The company sent an invoice for an unsupplied construction project and the head of a Košice city district approved payment for it, Palko told journalists.

An indictment for fraud has also been brought against the chairman of the board of directors of the Kame Slovakia - Group.

In March the same company was involved in the alleged bribery of Košice Deputy Mayor Eugen Čuňo, a member of Prime Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda's Slovak Democratic and Christian Union. The municipal official charged in the present case also comes from that party.

Asked whether payments in either case may have ended up in the party's treasury, Vladimír Palko, a member of the Christian Democratic Movement, refused to answer and denied that the investigation had any political undertones.
