Soldiers were victims of mortar attack

THE THREE Slovak soldiers who died along with two Poles and one Latvian soldier after a blast in Iraq two days ago were the victims of a mortar attack, investigation showed.

According to the Slovak daily SME, unknown attackers fired four mortars.

The tragedy provoked extensive reactions in Slovakia, with some parliamentary opposition parties, such as the Slovak Communist Party, demanding the immediate withdrawal of the Slovak unit in Iraq.

The Defence Ministry, however, is not considering such a move.
