THE LEADER of the opposition party Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, Vladimír Mečiar, thinks that Slovakia should have a minister for European affairs as soon as possible, the news wire SITA reported.
If the ruling coalition does not create such a post after the approval of the European Constitution, Mečiar said that he would propose it himself. Mečiar already has his candidate for the post: current EU commissioner Ján Figel. He says that Figel would be better suited to the ministerial post than as EU commissioner.
Mečiar also suggested that each ministry have a state secretary for the EU agenda. The proposal is the first major public statement that Mečiar has made since his defeat in the country's presidential elections.
