Rusko to slash natural parks

ECONOMY Minister Pavol Rusko wants to significantly slash the number of protected natural sites in Slovakia, arguing that they should not be closed to tourism, the daily Pravda reported.

Rusko would like to see hotels and ski resorts built on the spots. However, the cabinet has recently adopted a list of 382 protected natural sites of European significance. The list will be submitted to the European Commission, which should decide what selected sites are to be added to the NATURA 2000 list.

This process may take up to three years; meanwhile, Slovakia has to secure protection for all sites on the list.
