President Gašparovič condemns Tiso's regime

PRESIDENT Ivan Gašparovič condemned the first Slovak state, which was led by Jozef Tiso, during the unveiling of a holocaust memorial in northern Slovakia's Žilina.

Former Speaker of the Israeli Parliament Sevach Weiss and Žilina Mayor Jan Slota attended the ceremony, the daily SME wrote.

Slota, who has defended Tiso’s state in the past, saying that it was prosperous in terms of both the economy and the spirit of Christianity, refrained from expressing sympathy for Tiso.

The wartime state was a puppet of Nazi Germany and collaborated in the deportation of Jews to concentration camps.
