Mečiar's plan to overthrow the cabinet failed

LEADER of the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS), Vladimír Mečiar, tried to persuade deputies of the Free Forum and opposition Smer to overthrow the cabinet, daily Pravda wrote.

Mečiar made these attempts earlier this summer, however, the parties did not consider his initiative credible or serious enough. The opposition also did not have the necessary number of votes to bring down the current government.

"It was nothing official. He talked to us in the hallways saying that we should try it in a sense that we can show them strength," Free Forum's Branislav Opaterný described Mečiar's endeavors.
