THE BRATISLAVA City Gallery hosts WOLS: Photos, Aquarelles, and Graphic Works, an exhibition of work by Alfred Wolfgang Schulze (aka Wols). Wols is considered the pioneer of Tachisme (from the French word "tache," which means spot), a French style of abstract painting current in the 1940s and 1950s. The exhibition consists of 40 black-and-white photos, 33 etchings and 12 aquarelles, which show influences from the Surrealist Paris circle. Photos depict scenes from everyday life, people, and strange or morbid still lives. In his etchings, some of which were used to illustrate first-edition texts by Jean Paul Sartre and Franz Kafka, Wols incorporates real animal and plant structures. WOLS: Photos, Aquarelles, and Graphic Works runs daily except Mondays from 11:00 to 18:00 until October 3 at the Galéria mesta Bratislavy (Bratislava City Gallery - GMB), Mirbachov palác (Mirbach Palace), Františkánske námestie 11. EVERY second weekend in September the citizens of Banská Štiavnica dress in traditional costumes and weave lizard-like through the streets of old town in an annual parade known as Salamander Days. The event recalls the town's past as a leading mining centre in Europe. Legend has it that a poor shepherd first discovered silver in the Banská Štiavnica hills when he noticed silver dust on the backs of lizards. The procession starts its march on Friday at 19:00. During the event, taking place downtown between September 10 and 12, musicians and handicraftsmen ply their wares. Beer lovers can slake their thirst in various competitions.
