Another underworld figure murdered

LESS THAN THREE months after an alleged Mafia boss, Jozef Svoboda, was killed in Bratislava, another leading Mafia figure, Peter Čongrády, was gunned down September 9 as he was getting out of his armoured limousine.

Police vice president, Jaroslav Spišiak, said that Čongrády was shot down at Pečnianska Street near a local pizzeria with several bullets from a machine gun.

"Practically one quarter of his head was shot off," Spišiak said.

According to the Pravda daily, Čongrády was one of the most influential Bratislava underworld figures and allegedly took over the lead of a local Sýkorovci group after Miroslav Sýkora was killed in 1997.

Čongrády's murder is the fourth killing of top Mafia figures this year.
