BUSINESS BRIEFS

Food prices plunge

A DRAMATIC decrease in food prices in August surprised analysts, according to the SME daily. The 1 percent drop comes after a long period of rising prices. Inflation also recorded a decrease, falling 0.1 percent month-on-month.

After EU accession, food prices rose significantly but August brought some relief.

"A good harvest this year could also attenuate the price growth for the rest of the year," said ING Bank economist, Ján Tóth.
