SURVIVING Slovakia

We are a Slovak couple and got married on holiday in Las Vegas. Now we would like to make our marriage official in the Slovak Republic. Can you please advise us how to do this?
Any Slovak citizens who marry outside Slovakia should follow the same procedure. First of all make sure you have a marriage certificate, as without this you will not be able to prove you are married. The marriage certificate must be authorised. In the United States, authorisation must be carried out by the relevant state: in your case it would be Nevada.

Once you receive your marriage certificate from the USA get it officially translated. You can expect to pay a fee of at least 600Sk (€15) for each page translated. You will also need your original birth certificates, IDs and if one of you was previously married, divorce papers.

Cases like yours are dealt with by the Osobitná matrika in Bratislava - a special registry in Bratislava. You should go to them with all the above-mentioned documents and pay the necessary fee. They will issue a Slovak Marriage Certificate, which validates your marriage in the Slovak Republic.

Note: There is a very efficient way of getting birth or marriage certificates from the USA. You just need to visit www.vitalrecords.com and request the document you need. They will issue, authorise and send it by courier anywhere in the world, charging you the necessary amount from your credit card. This way you do not have to do any travelling and you can have your document within one week.

I would like to buy a car in Slovakia for export? How do I do this?

If you are from the European Union you just buy your car notifying the car dealer that the car is destined for export and will not be registered in Slovakia. This way you will not pay the 19% VAT (Value Added Tax) on the car. Once the car is bought you will have 30 days to register your car in your home country.

If you are not from an EU country and would like to buy and use a car here you need a Slovak residence permit. Without this you will not be able to register the car.
