NEWS BRIEFS

Youth alcohol consumption up

YOUNG people should be warned not only about drugs but also about the dangers of alcohol consumption, Slovak Deputy PM Pál Csáky said November 19.

According to media reports, Slovak authorities have registered moderate growth of alcohol consumption among young people between the ages of 11 and 23.

The results of the last survey showed that the number of girls and boys who drink alcohol has increased. Slovakia’s boys are in sixth place and girls in fifth place among young alcohol consumers in Europe, TASR news agency wrote.

However, the number of drug addicts has fallen in Slovakia. The majority of drug consumers are young people between 23 and 27.

Around 2,000 schools took part in the “War against Drugs Week” campaign, which started November 15 in Bratislava. Slovakia has allocated around Sk80 million (€2 million) to combat drug abuse this year.
