SLOVAK MPs yesterday supported the start of EU accession talks with Turkey.
The MPs also agreed that although the accession talks could start, Turkey would only gain entry when all the political criteria set down for EU membership had been met.
All members of parliament supported the recommendation, apart from the ruling Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), and the independent MP, Ivan Šimko.
KDH chairman Pavel Hrušovský said that instead of EU membership, Turkey should be granted a status of "privileged partnership", in line with the suggestion of the European Christian Democrat parties.
