More lay-offs at STV

THE PUBLIC television station STV is to lay off 42 more of its staff, according to the TASR news agency.

The first lay-offs started in May 2003, when 1,015 employees had to leave their posts.

STV General Director Richard Rybníček said in June 2003 that he considered the lay-offs complete and he expected to save Sk23 million (€593,000) a month from the move. However, the government had to pay Sk250 million [€64 million] in severance pay to those

STV management member Branislav Zahradník said that the current lay-offs represent another step to rationalize and restructure STV's operation. Opposition MP Dušan Jarjabek of the Movemement for a Democratic Slovakia party said it was still not certain whether the previous lay-offs were of any use.
