Reader feedback: Gemer comes closest

Re: Slovak brewery up for sale, Flash News, January 24 - January 30, 2005

It's no more than a matter of taste of course, but I rate Castle [a South African beer] well. The nearest in taste in Slovakia, in my opinion, is Gemer (from the Heineken stable), allowing for the fact that Gemer is 3.8 percent and Castle 5 percent per sip. The slight difference in taste is more than compensated for by the cost (in South Africa 87 rands or SK435 for 10 litres, and in Slovakia Sk170 or 34 rands for the same quantity).

Píšem or pišám?

"Do ľava," (to the left) I yelled, "Nie, do prava" (no, to the right), I gasped. "Dolšie," I screamed. "Nie, nie, horšie..." My Slovak girlfriend collapsed in laughter. Was it something I said?
