Ski Window

SLOVAKIA has experienced record snowfalls this ski season. Almost all of the nation's 101 ski resorts are open with decent ski conditions. All this open terrain has allowed people to spread out, so slopes are not crowded. Snow cover at major resorts ranges from 100 to 300 cms of snow. Metereorologists call for sunny but cold days with temperatures falling to -20 C at night in the valleys.

Snow conditions and ticket prices valid as February 3

SLOVAKIA has experienced record snowfalls this ski season. Almost all of the nation's 101 ski resorts are open with decent ski conditions. All this open terrain has allowed people to spread out, so slopes are not crowded. Snow cover at major resorts ranges from 100 to 300 cms of snow. Metereorologists call for sunny but cold days with temperatures falling to -20 C at night in the valleys. By day, the sun will warm the mountain slopes to -4 C, but the valleys will remain colder. February is high ski season in Slovakia, and many resorts will be hosting interesting events. Donovaly will feature the World Dog Sled Championship from February 10 to 13 (see page 13). The Becherovka Ski Show at Vrátna on February 13 will feature bungee jumping and acrobatic skiing. The final episode of the Slovak TV show, Dream Wedding, will be filmed at Veľká Rača, and there will be a big wedding party to celebrate the affair. For terrain park aficionados, the parks at Veľká Rača, Martinské hole, Vrátna and Donovaly are in prime form.

For those seeking a small resort experience, we suggest Kubínska hoľa (hal.vud.sk/kubhola) in Orava just 15 km from Dolný Kubín. The resort offers 4,5 k of trails, about a 676 m vertical, and three ski lifts. Snow conditions promise great skiing thanks 65 to 170 cms of natural snow. This resort can only be reached by car. We also like Čierny Balog, a charming little resort not far from Brezno in Central Slovakia. Čierny Balog boasts 95 cms of snow and offers 6,3 kilometers of ski trails and a vertical difference of 250 m (www.skiciernybalog.sk).
