Low language skill levels

PUPILS studying foreign languages in Slovak schools are not reaching the required standard, according to the daily SME.

Because of this, many Slovak pupils try to avoid taking school-leaving examinations in a foreign language.

Inspectors criticized both the lack of teachers and the teaching-quality in Slovak schools. They are calling on the Education Ministry to take action.

One reason behind the low level is that it is common for several teachers to teach the same class over the school year. Another is that class sizes are very high.
