Slovakia-USA: Trade balance positive Jan-Oct 2004

ACCORDING to preliminary data released by the Slovak Statistics Office, in the 2004 January to October period Slovakia enjoyed a trade surplus with the US of Sk27.32 billion (€717.81 million) for exports which rose by 20.7 percent year-on-year.

From January to September 30, the US invested Sk16.65 billion (€430 million) in Slovakia, representing 4.5 percent of the total investment, the TASR news service wrote.

The US is the 9th largest foreign investor in Slovakia. Germany is first, accounting for 22.7 percent of the country's foreign direct investment. The largest single American investment in Slovakia is US Steel, based in Košice (Eastern Slovakia).

German carmaker Volkswagen is one of Slovakia's largest exporters to the US, successfully selling its Touareg car on the American market.
