MARCH has arrived like a lion in Slovakia with record-breaking snow and bitterly cold weather. There is a moderate, level three avalanche hazard in the High and Low Tatras, and last week, an avalanche killed two snowboarders in the High Tatras. When skiing off trail, always hire a certified mountain guide and carry an avalanche kit (a shovel, beacon, and probe). Meteorologists forecast another week of cold weather with scattered snow showers and temperatures in the mountains ranging from -10 in the morning to -2 degree in the afternoon. Last Friday, I skied a nice small resort in the Low Tatras called Liptovská Teplička (950 - 1,300 m), www.tldtatry.sk. Just 45 minutes from Poprad by car, this resort has three Poma lifts, a grooming machine, night skiing, and snowmaking cannons. The 1,250-metre long intermediate slope proved steep enough to challenge me but better skiers can explore ungroomed terrain off trail. The resort's high elevation makes for snow conditions similar to Štrbské Pleso, and a day ticket at Liptovská Teplička is Sk350.

When visiting the Tatras, do not miss a gondola ride to the top of Lomnický peak (2,632 m). The gondola base station is Tatranská Lomnica, a 20-minute drive from Poprad or a short trip on the famous High Tatras electric train. A round trip gondola ride is Sk800.
