SLOVAKIA is experiencing its coldest winter in 50 years and there is still no end in sight. Ideal snow conditions can be found at nearly every resort in the country due to daily snow showers and persistent cold weather. I skied in Skipark Ružomberok last weekend, and never once waited in line for a lift. These are the best of times for winter sports enthusiasts in Slovakia. With the exception of possible mixed rain and snow showers on Wednesday, the cold weather should continue with mountain temperatures ranging from -8/-12 by morning and -6/-2 by day.
Park Snow Donovaly invites you to the K2 Slovak Freeskiing Challenge on March 19. Jasná will host the Becherovka Ski Show (ski cross, exhibitions, and jumping) on the same day. Skalky, a medium-sized resort near the historic town of Kremnica, has six lifts and close to 9.56 kilometres of marked trails. The resort currently advertises 150 cms of snow - an excellent base not only for downhill skiing but cross-country as well. Skalky connects to Kremnica's extensive network of Nordic trails and offers some of the finest "freeheel" skiing in all of Slovakia. For more, see www.skalky.sk.
