Matica Slovenská needs cash

MATICA Slovenská (MS), Slovakia's national cultural institution, will receive Sk47.5 million (€1.26 million) in 2005, according to the proposed budget.

However the MS lacks Sk11.5 million (€300,000) needed to finance its activities, said MS spokesman Stanislav Bajaník after an MS committee session in Martin on March 12, the TASR news agency wrote.

The MS committee also noted that MS needs Sk13 million (€340,000) for its second building's reconstruction. The operational deficit for MS' full-scale activities is approximately Sk15 million (€395,000), said Bajaník.

MS is negotiating with Slovakia's Culture Ministry to try and arrange non-state sources of funding.
