ALMOST 50 percent of Slovaks spend the largest portion of their income at the shops. This is about 10 percent more than Slovakia's neighbours in Hungary and the Czech Republic, according to a survey by the ACNielsen agency, the daily SME reported.
Of the Visegrad 4 countries only the Czech Republic has more hypermarkets per million people, 16 compared with Slovakia's 14.
However, there are far fewer discount stores in Slovakia than its Visegrad 4 neighbours. There are only 7 discount stores for every 1 million people in this country, while in Hungary there are 38, in the Czech Republic 34 and in Poland 21.
Slovakia is the only country in the region where people put price among the most important criteria for a majority of products .
