AFTER a brief period of rain and snow at the beginning of the week, the weather in the mountains should stay clear until Friday, when rain will return, along with warmer temperatures. Temperatures in the mountains will range from -6 at night to 4 from Tuesday to Thursday under partly cloudy skies. Although some snow is finally beginning to melt, the ample snowpack at most resorts should insure excellent conditions through the first two weeks of April. The avalanche risk had dropped down to level 2 in most high mountain areas, but given the overall warming trend in the weather, one should check updates posted by the Slovak Mountain Rescue Service, http://www.hzs.sk/info/-lavinyprehlad.php.

Spring is a time for reduced priced lift tickets and accommodation at most major Slovak Ski centers. Jasná, for example, reports excellent snow conditions with over 90 to 105 cms of snow. After March 29, the day ticket price at Jasná drops to Sk390. Lomnické Sedlo will reduce its rates from Sk750 to Sk350, and Skipark Ružomberok, from Sk650 to Sk350. So get out and enjoy some excellent skiing on the cheap. For smaller resorts, however, call before you travel because some village slopes will only be opened on weekends during the spring season.
