Smer to back early election proposal

OPPOSITION party Smer said it is ready to back its fellow opposition party, the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, in its proposal for early general elections. However, at the proposal's second reading in parliament, Smer intends to propose changing the date of the election from June 10 to April 8, the news wire TASR wrote.

Smer Chairman Robert Fico said that Smer would not submit an early-election proposal on its own. Fico said that his party agreed with the HZDS to back its proposal to hold early elections and wants to keep to the agreement. "In the first reading we will support the bill and in the second propose April 8," he said.

There have been two early-election proposals submitted to parliament so far: One from the Slovak Communist Party (KSS) calling for a March 25 date, and the HZDS' June 10 proposal.

Fico asked opposition parties to discuss early election dates. Smer, stressing that its own date is realistic, would particularly like to hold discussions with the KSS.

A proposal such as this, which would amend the constitution, requires the support of 90 MPs at its second and third reading in parliament.
