Reader feedback: Root out evil

Re: March against neo-Nazis tomorrow, Flash news, November 8, 2005

What is the root cause of skinhead violence? Some say poverty, or ignorance. But plenty of people endure both without carrying a knife or beating people up in packs.

The root cause is simply human evil, and should be treated as such, including being "rooted out" by a police force that has spent far too much time in the past looking the other way because the skinheads promised to create the kind of "order" in society they are afraid to do themselves.

Why do we have to pretend that everyone who commits a horrible crime must have a "root cause" that explains his actions and leaves him somehow less culpable?
