Austrian RCA plans Slovak cargo railway expansion

A BIDDER for the 100-percent stake in Slovak railway company Cargo Slovakia, Rail Cargo Austria (RCA), wants a major stake in the Slovak market for strategic reasons, RCA Executive Director Ferdinand Schmidt told reporters in Vienna and Linz on November 29.

"For us, Slovakia is an important geographic location," Schmidt explained, adding that there are several possibilities for RCA to expand on the Slovak market, the TASR news wire wrote.

He listed taking part in the tender, economic cooperation with an existing firm, or entering the market and building its own network and concluded that purchasing an existing company presented the simplest solution.

RCA is a cargo rail company of the Österreichische Bundesbahn concern, which since 2005 has had the status of a joint-stock company whose strategic territory is Central and Eastern Europe. Its 2004 turnover reached €1.8 billion, and it employs 4,750 people.
