22,300 people received unemployment benefits

THE SOCIAL security provider Sociálna Poisťovňa paid unemployment benefits to 22,300 jobless people in Slovakia on average each month last year. Compared to 2006, this is a drop of 17.4 percent, according to a report on the social situation of Slovakia's population in 2007.

THE SOCIAL security provider Sociálna Poisťovňa paid unemployment benefits to 22,300 jobless people in Slovakia on average each month last year. Compared to 2006, this is a drop of 17.4 percent, according to a report on the social situation of Slovakia's population in 2007.

Compared with 2006, the cost of providing unemployment benefits also dropped - by 7 percent, to Sk1.79 billion (€59 million). The average monthly unemployment benefit stood at Sk6,713 (€222), 12.8 percent more than in 2006. The rennual decrease in the number of benefit recipients was caused by a fall in unemployment and the relatively strict conditions to qualify for the benefit.
