THE SOCIAL security provider Sociálna Poisťovňa paid unemployment benefits to 22,300 jobless people in Slovakia on average each month last year. Compared to 2006, this is a drop of 17.4 percent, according to a report on the social situation of Slovakia's population in 2007.
Compared with 2006, the cost of providing unemployment benefits also dropped - by 7 percent, to Sk1.79 billion (€59 million). The average monthly unemployment benefit stood at Sk6,713 (€222), 12.8 percent more than in 2006. The rennual decrease in the number of benefit recipients was caused by a fall in unemployment and the relatively strict conditions to qualify for the benefit.
