Lightning killed mother and 2-year-old in Súľov

A TRIP to Súľov Castle on July 13 ended in a double tragedy. A family with two young boys was surprised by a sudden storm, during which the mother and her 2-year-old son were struck by lightning. Both were killed, and the father was left injured and in shock. It was left to the other boy, aged 5, to seek help in the nearest village.

A TRIP to Súľov Castle on July 13 ended in a double tragedy. A family with two young boys was surprised by a sudden storm, during which the mother and her 2-year-old son were struck by lightning. Both were killed, and the father was left injured and in shock. It was left to the other boy, aged 5, to seek help in the nearest village.

An employee of the local emergency services operation centre in Žilina told the SITA newswire that rescuers had to rely on the small boy to lead them to the site of accident via a difficult, rocky path involving ladders and chains.

According to the operations officer, the father suffered only light injuries .
Bad weather prevented use of a helicopter in the rescue operation.
