Slovak parliament approves new guard unit for Afghanistan

Slovakia will deploy a new 57-member guard unit to the ISAF operation in Afghanistan, parliament decided on Wednesday, February 3, the TASR newswire wrote.

The costs of sending the unit, which will be dispatched to Kandahar, will reach €3.4 million in 2010. The mandate of the unit, which will guard a new entrance point (ECP-5) of the NATO base in Kandahar, will last until the end of the NATO's ISAF mission in Afghanistan.

A 61-member Slovak guard unit is currently active at the air base in Kandahar. The mandate of the unit is to change soon to allow it broadening of its scope of operations. TASR
