This year’s Bratislava Old Town Summer of Culture / Staromestské kultúrne leto series includes a concert of classical Indian music featuring some renowned musicians. Kala Ramnath, a versatile and respected musician will play violin with Abhijit Banerjee, one of the most significant Indian players of the traditional tabla percussion instrument and the composer of the music for “The Trail”, a documentary which received several awards including one for music. MODERN DANCE: Dance in the Garden / Tanec v záhrade – As part of the city’s Summer of Culture festival, the fourth year of summer dance School LAB1 lead by Marta Poláková will present its results in the Medical Garden / Medická záhrada.

EXHIBITION: Young Package - Mladý obal – This year’s entries in this annual competition for young designers and design students have been judged and visitors can see the best works at the Satelit exhibition venue of the Slovak Design Centre.

EXHIBITION: Current Serbian Icon Painting / Súčasný srbský ikonopis – This exhibition presents current works and perceptions of classical religious motifs, painted with albumin tempera or acrylic, and signed and sometimes finished with 23-carat gold.

MUSIC FESTIVAL: Bažant Pohoda Festival – This well-established festival of music and more, which takes place each year at Trenčín Airport, lures thousands of visitors with attractions from movie screenings and a final Sunday mass to a classical performance by the Košice Philharmonic Orchestra, dance programmes, international rock acts, local bands like Para, Bez ladu a skladu, Mňága a Žďorp (from the Czech Republic), and many others.

EXHIBITION: Ceci n’est pas un pedagogue – This exhibition brings together works by lecturers from the Faculty of Education of Trnava University and their students: painter and lecturer Veronika Rónaiová, students of the studio of Blažej Baláž, and students of the inter-media work.

The traditional Poľana Folklore Festivities / Folklórne slávnosti pod Poľanou in Detva will feature more than 1,400 performers, 10 scenic programmes, 11 accompanying events, 8 traditional markets and 7 exhibitions, most of them between July 9 and 11. The festival includes performances by folklore ensembles, workshops comprising folk dancing, classes in mastering the old fujara (a traditional woodwind instrument) and traditional crafts; master wood-carvers; amateur sculptors; demonstrations of the typical life and work of shepherds; and much more. For a single ticket costing between €1.50 and €3.50, visitors will be able to choose what they see in the local amphitheatre, cultural centre, the Podpolianske Museum and other venues. CLASSICAL MUSIC: The Days of Cyril and Methodius / Cyrilometodské dni – The 21st occasion of this festival is dedicated to the Year of Christian Culture and includes, among other things, the Final Concert from the Works of Antonio Vivaldi, performed by the Bohdan Warchal Chamber Orchestra.

MUSIC FESTIVAL: Orange JOJ Music Summer 2010 – Another well-established local festival of pop music, this one brings together the best acts from Slovakia and the Czech Republic, e.g. Desmod, No Name, IMT Smile, Horkýže Slíže, Hex, Polemic, Chinaski and others. It also includes dance music and screenings of popular series from Slovak TV channel JOJ.

PHOTO EXHIBITION: Pete Souza: Barack Obama, Man and President / Barack Obama, Človek a prezident – This exhibition by an American photo-journalist who currently works as the official photographer for the White House is being held with the assistance of the US Embassy in Slovakia and shows President Obama’s daily routine, at work as well as in his leisure time and with his family.
