Slovak shot-putter Libor Charfreitag won a gold medal at the European Athletics Championships in Barcelona on Wednesday, July 28, with a throw of 80.02 metres. The Italian Nicola Vizzoni secured silver with 79.12 metres, while the bronze went to Hungarian Krisztian Pars with 79.06 metres.
Shortly after his victory Charfreitag said: "To win at the European Championships is something wonderful in itself. However, I view this gold also from another perspective, as deep satisfaction for all those years of hard work that I've dedicated to this discipline." He added, in comments reported by the TASR newswire, "My performance may not have been impressive in technical terms, but it's the result that counts and that is fantastic for me."
