Smer MP Igor Choma will be the party’s official candidate for the post of mayor of Žilina in the local elections in November, the TASR newswire reported on August 3.
According to Choma, who until recently held the post of chairman of the National Highway Company (NDS), the trust that Smer's structures have displayed in him has made him embrace the nomination. On Friday, he is set to present the main items of his programme at a press conference that will also be attended by party chairman and former prime minister Robert Fico as well as party vice-chair and former interior minister Robert Kaliňák. Other hopefuls for the post include current mayor Ivan Harman (Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ)) and Ľubomír Bažík (Christian Democratic Movement (KDH)), along with Patrik Groma, Richard Dragoun, František Bobenič and Ivan Ganóczy (all running as independents).
