Finance Ministry proposes higher excise taxes on tobacco and beer

The excise tax on beer will increase next March from €1.65 to €2.45 per hectolitre and the same increase of 49 percent will apply to small brewers where the rate is to go up from €1.22 to €1.82 per hectolitre, according to a proposal of the Finance Ministry, the SITA newswire wrote.

As of March of 2011, the excise tax rates on tobacco and tobacco products are to be increased as well, SITA wrote. The tax rates on tobacco will be raised in two steps, in order to comply with applicable EU legislation as of January 1, 2014. From next March, the rates should go up by five percent and as of March 1, 2013 by additional five percent.
