Cyprus opened an embassy in Slovakia on Wednesday, November 10. Slovakia has had an embassy on the island since independence on January 1, 1993.

“We welcome the opening of the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus. It is a
country where the position of our diplomacy is very significant,” Slovak Foreign Ministry spokesman Ľuboš Schwarzbacher said, as reported by the SITA newswire.

The island is the subject of an ongoing dispute between Turkey and Greece in which Slovakia is an important actor, as the Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots have met at the Slovak Embassy for several years.

The new embassy takes on some of the work previously handled by Cyprus’ embassy in Vienna.
