Telecoms operator SWAN a.s. is a Slovak nationwide provider of effective electronic communication solutions on a highly professional level for a wide scale of clients: from households to the biggest corporations. Technological options, an ever enhancing scale of offered services, developing international cooperation, and a continuing dynamic development of the company rank the SWAN amongst innovators and leaders on the Slovak market. We talked about its history, orientation, and plans for future with SWAN CEO Ing. Stanislav Verešvársky.
The SWAN company has been on the Slovak telecoms-market for almost 10 years. What is its development history, and where is it now?
In May 2001, the trade brand of the company Callino changed after it received the licence to render telecommunication services to SWAN a.s. (i.e. joint-stock company) one year earlier. In the following years, thanks to several acquisitions, a deliberate building of its own infrastructure, and investments in new technologies, SWAN became one of the most successful telecoms operators on the Slovak market. In 2008, we achieved total revenues amounting to 33.65 million Euros which has made us, from an economic point of view, the biggest alternative operator in Slovakia. In 2009, SWAN placed fourth in sales of voice- and internet services in a competitive environment of huge international operators, in the influential economy- and enterprise magazine TREND’s respected TOP TELECOM chart. We also defended our position as the biggest alternative operator. According to the TOP TELECOM chart again, the amount of total receipts for 2009 meant that SWAN was in seventh place within the Slovak telecoms market for that year. These economic results reflect our long-term development and strategy, as well as our growth in all spheres of telecommunication.
What is currently your main orientation?
The portfolio of SWAN’s services comprises of voice-, data-, internet- and multimedia services, as well as security services. SWAN is one of only a few companies in Slovakia to offer integrated services, based on its own infrastructure in two licensed bands: FWA 26GHz and WiMAX 3.5 GHz. The high-capacity backbone is built on optical routes with transmission platform IP MPLS (i.e. MultiProtocol Label Switching). This means that we are able to offer our clients individually tailored telecommunication services, with above-standard supervision and service.
You did not mention services for households. What can SWAN offer them?
Our product line MAX Multimedia was designed especially for our household clients. This includes the services of digital television (including a trial 3-D and sharp HD broadcast), a fixed line phone and internet connection. MAX multimedia services were launched on December 1, 2007, and currently, we offer fibre-optic internet up to the speed of 80Mbit/sec., and digital TV with 109 channels. These services are transmitted primarily via our fibre-optic network. The length of the metropolitan fibre-optic network just in the capital city Bratislava exceeds 140 kilometres. The optical network is also at the disposal of the operation of services in Trnava, Nitra, Sereď, Malacky, Pezinok, Trenčín, Nová Dubnica, Dubnica nad Váhom, Púchov and Komárno. SWAN is currently continuing to build it further in other selected towns and regions of Slovakia, and is also continuously expanding the existing access- and skeleton network.
Does SWAN offer more telecommunication services for the whole spectrum of clients?
Another of our services intended for the wider public is SWAN mobile – the prepaid phone card that enables cheap calls and other standard services of mobile telephony. SWAN mobile is a partner product of the companies SWAN and Telefónica O2 Slovakia s r.o. Together with our sister company – CNC a.s., we recently launched PERPETUUS – the most up-to-date data centre in the whole Slovak Republic, intended primarily for companies that require a guaranteed and stable environment for their IT infrastructure, the securing of a 24/7 electric feed of technologies, and also those which are considering the possibility of locating their infrastructure outside their operation premises and are entrusting experts to administer this.
What would you like to say in conclusion?
In ten years, the SWAN company cemented a position as one of the most successful Slovak firms. Currently, it is even prepared to render services not just within the networks of Slovakia, but also in an international environment; this expands and enriches on current possibilities through the cooperation with renowned global telco operators. SWAN also intends to show in the future that it is interested in fulfilling standard- as well as specific requirements and expectations of clients concerning the operation of data-, internet-, multimedia and voice services.
