THE PRESSBURGER Klezmer Band, this time featuring famous British clarinettist Merlin Shepherd, gives a concert at the Za Zrkadlom Club at Rovniankova 3 in Bratislava, at 20:00 on April 9. The band plays klezmer, i.e. secular European-Jewish music meant for celebrations, weddings, etc. Tickets cost €8 and can be bought through www.ticketportal.sk, or for €10 at the door.


CLASSICAL MUSIC: Dva pohľady / Two Views – Within the cycle Musical Mosaic, the Slovak Philharmonic brings a concert of works by two famous composers, Hungarian György Kurtág and Ukrainian-Slovak Evgenyi Iršai, performed by top musicians: violinist Milan Paľa, soprano Eva Šušková, cimbalom player Michal Paľko, and Iršai on piano. One of Kurtág’s composition is a Slovak premiere and one of Iršai’s works is a world premiere.

BALLET: Balet Gala – This gala evening brings ingenious dancer-choreographer Rudolf Nureyev’s work to Slovakia for the first time, hosting stars like Vladimir Malachov, Cédric Ygnace and Nina Poláková. The money raised will go to a charity that tackles the effects of drug abuse.

RUNNING: Beh Devín-Bratislava – The 64th year of a fun-run open to all ages and fitness categories. The course is 11,625 metres long and traditionally attracts thousands of runners from several countries.

EXHIBITION: Blondínky & Londýnky / Blondes & Londoners – An exhibition of abstract and figurative paintings by Czech artist Jakub Špaňhel.

LIVE MUSIC: RetroACT Experience Bosorak Tour 2011 – This new musical project by Slovak drummer Martin Valihora brings, apart from his drums, Oskar Rózsa on bass, and Eugen Vizváry on keyboard in a combination of acid jazz, funk and soul.

Liptovský Mikuláš

EXHIBITION: Martin Benka (1888-1971) – This phenomenal Slovak painter has become a symbol for a whole period of Slovak art. Two more exhibitions, of more recent Slovak artists, are also on show until April 9.

Vysoké Tatry

SKI-TOURING is a form of backcountry skiing involving traversing winter landscapes on downhill skis after climbing up rather than using ski lifts; it enjoys considerable popularity in Slovakia. On April 9, the 3rd Skialp Maratón Sedlami Vysokých Tatier (Ski-touring Marathon Through the Passes of the High Tatras) will be run in the municipality of Vysoké Tatry from 7:30. Disciplines include a marathon (with an ascent of 2,890 metres) and a half-marathon (with an ascent of 1,750 metres) for seniors (born in 1972 and later) and veterans (born before 1971).
