If you‘re looking for fun in Bratislava, there are two ways to take in the local nightlife: party in downtown, or party mostly with the locals around the city. It makes sense that there would be a different atmosphere depending on the location, or even the day of the week. Locals just have their favourite places and don‘t need to rely on the Old Town by default. And there‘s nothing saying that one type of outing is better than the other - it‘s a matter of taste.

As for what to expect at the clubs, electronic music reigns here, but there are also places that specialise in jazz, Cuban, pop and other styles. A detailed list of pubs can be found at the bottom of this double page. More clubs are located in Župné Námestie, near St Michael‘s Gate (pg 24, map C6), and on Ventúrska street (pg 24, map C5).

The Old Town still has mainly small, boutique-style shops, which have grown in number and moved upmarket. But there are now at least five large shopping centres in the city (Aupark, Avion, Eurovea, Polus and Shopping Palace), the most accessible of which are probably Eurovea, close to Šafárikovo nám., and Aupark, just over the New Bridge.ÚĽUV, a shop which specialises in Slovak art and handicrafts, is a good place to pick up genuine, if pricy, local souvenirs. It has two sites in the city centre, on Obchodná (pg 24, map F4) and SNP Square (pg 24, map F6). A lot of souvenir shops are in the historical centre. The high prices for some goods often come as a surprise to foreigners. This may be the reason why a lot of people from Bratislava shop in Győr (Hungary, 79 km), the outlet centre in Parndorf (Austria, 34 km) or in Vienna (79 km).
