MUSIC CITY returns with another day-long series of free musical performances across Bratislava on Saturday, May 12. The main stage will be under the Lafranconi Bridge, where various performers (including Hex, Vidiek, Rytmus, Kontrafakt and more) will appear. Other venues will be the ELAM student nightclub; the Music Gallery u Dežmára; Eurovea Shopping Centre; Hlavné / Main Square; Mlyny, and near the Propeler Café on the Danube embankment where there will be a silent disco in the evening. In the Klarisky Concert Hall there will be a musical evening with Marián Varga (see photo) and the Moyzes Quartet. There will also be a floating stage on the Martin riverboat; and the Electronic Beats Festival (with an admission fee of €14) at the Slovnaft Refinery Gallery. More information can be found at

Quiz Night – The Irish Chamber of Commerce is organising a general knowledge quiz, offering – among other things – tickets to the forthcoming Cranberries gig as a prize.

Judas Priest – The legendary British heavy metal band (comprising Glenn Lipton, Richie Faulkner, Ian Hill, Scot Travis and Rob Halford) perform their biggest hits as well as new pieces.

Bull Riding Slovakia Cup 2012 – The first event of this type in Slovakia is an international championship in this discipline, including riders from eight European countries as well as the USA and Canada, which are the twin cradles of this extreme sport. Later, the event moves to Košice.

Deli Week v Bratislave – After Košice, the capital will also see a host of events at various sites focusing on good-quality coffee, tea, desserts (including less-known cupcakes), ice cream and more. Saturday is also oriented towards design.

Fotospomienky na Antarktídu / Photo-memories of Antarctica – A lecture by Kristián Brat, a member of a 2011-2012 research expedition from Masaryk Unversity in Brno to the Mendel polar station on James Ross Island in Antarctica. The lecture will be in Czech, with photos.

LOVERS of big bikes will meet at the Margita-Ilona holiday resort near Levice for the Riders party on the weekend of May 11 to 13. It is one of the five biggest events of this kind in Slovakia and will host bikers from all over the country. It starts with a parade through Levice on Friday, continues with a Sprint of Bikes race, part of the Slovak Cup, and will end with a music programme in the evening.

Pavel Šporcl – Within the Košická hudobná jar / Košice Musical Spring, this world-famous Czech violin virtuoso will perform – conducted by Poland’s Patricyja Pieczara – the overture to Borodin’s opera Prince Igor, his Polovtsian Dances, Eroch. W. Korngold’s Concert for Violin and Orchestra in D Major, and Ottorino Respighi’s Impressioni Brasiliane.

Prešovská hudobná jar 2012 – The Prešov Musical Spring is in full swing, and here offers a concert celebrating 20 years of the Ján Pöschl hobby musical school for children, which hosts a Youth String Orchestra, Witches, the Brass Band of the ZUŠ Jána Pöschla and PKO, Fatimas, and more.
